Oh, sister, I feel ya. We had a heatwave last week. Nothing like a high of 104F to ruin a day.

Out of school?! Already? That doesn't seem fair.

I love when summer is over. Does that count? No? Jeez...

I love sitting outside in the evening when there's a breeze and smelling the smoke from neighboring BBQs and listening to the crickets and frogs sing.

I love getting up early and having enough sunlight to garden before anyone else is awake and making noise. Seeing honeybees sleeping in flowers is a wonderful way to start a day... as long as I'm inside long before it gets hot, of course. ;^)

I love watermelon. The best watermelon in the world is Smith county, Mississippi watermelon from the side of a truck somewhere on Highway 80.

I love fresh, ripe fruit.

I love warm ocean currents.

I love high humidity, because it means the pain in my joints and the pain of my skin stops for a bit. (I have Sjögren's Syndrome, and hot weather makes me feel like a person instead of a ball of pain.)

I love summer veggies, straight from the backyard garden.

I love the way it feels to dive into a pool after walking through 101˚ heat. (I also love water slides.)

Is that enough summer lovin' for you? I sacrificed my Mississippi summer for a summer in the Hebrides, and I think I'm going to regret it. I want tanktops and too hot to move!

I love lounging in the backyard and feeling the cool breeze off the lake. Yes its 100 everywhere else but the backyard is almost 20 degrees cooler in the shade of the trees with the wonderful breeze blowing...

I love the smell of fresh cut grass and watching the birds play. I love to see the dogs enjoying the sunshine for the few minutes that they can before its just too hot for them.

I love finding interesting bugs. Watching the forest come to life. Celebrating birthdays in May, July and August. I love the smell of BBQ and the insistent humm of the boats on the water.

Mostly I love that everything seems more relaxed in the summer.

Hopefully your shaved ice cooled you right off!

guilt free air conditioning, with menopause upon me I would run it year round, but in NJ thats frowned upon. Flowers, fresh corn on the cob, fresh fruit and Jersey Tomato!!!!!

What I love about summer? The quiet streets in our town... ice cream of course and the fact that it is light in the evening - pleasant for knitting. What I don't like are grass pollen flying around... they make me feel miserable.

Here in Seattl our summer days are few. I love waking up to blue skies. Blue skies do not happen often and are not to be taken for granted. I love being able to have the deck doors open wide, and leave them open all day. Leaving them open all days means it did not rain. I love seeing clear light in the sky at 10pm. Oh summer, bring it on, all three days of it!

About summer.... I love that it has my wedding anniversay, my birthday, and my baby girl's birthday - so tons to celebrate! I also love sitting on the porch, drinking tea or lemonade and knitting with the gentle breeze..... so relaxing.

Hmmmm...it's hard to really love summer down here in Texas sometimes.

Things I like most about the summer
1. going barefoot or just flip-flops
2. air conditioning
3. summer dresses and skirts - light and airy
4. going to farmer's market and buying green tomatoes, okra, corn on the cob, purple hulled black-eyed peas, blackberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, zucchini and list just goes on. Taking it all home and cooking a big southern summer meal with my family.
5. swimming and going to the river to go tubing.
6. not having to get up at the butt-crack of dawn to take my daughter to school.
7. good sno-cone stands that know just how to make them perfect.
8. vacation even if it's just a couple of hours away.
9. reading good books outside while the kids play
10. going on early morning or late evening walks.

Greetings from Bianca and Finnish lappland.

Mostly I love summer the nightless nights that we have, you can read or knit in the middle of the night, sun gives the light.

And second best thing about summer is that you can after summer pick up berries in autumn, and strawberries in june.

And as a third thing ; I have my birthday in summer.

Need to say more?

Let's see...it's not even Memorial Day and we've had temps over 100 degrees, so it's not the weather.

It's not "no school" cuz I live in an apartment building with at least 1000 kids running around.

I know!!!!! It's that it's only 3 months long! That's what I love about summer!

Jana said...

I agree totally. I hate Summer - 90 - 100 isn't for people that's french fry warmer temps (probably). I so prefer Fall or even Winter, but Fall with fresh apples mmmm. I am doing my best to find something good.
1. the kids out of school (ha - that's a joke, my son is 16 & daughter is 23)
okay.
1. plenty of daylight to see stitches when knitting with dark colored yarn
2. watermelon
3. shaved ice - mmm
that's all I can come up with and I have been here for 2 hours thinking

Elaine said...

Well here it is unseasonably cold, rainy and dreary. Blah! But I don't think I'd like it over 100 either.

So count me in on the contest, and I'm posting on my blog.

Yeah - it was miserbly hot last week here too. But it is over and now it feels cold! Even tho it is back into typical temp ranges! The dop of 30 - 40 degrees can be hard to get use to!

What do I like about summer? It means that spring is over...and I hate spring becuase of my allergies!

And it means that fall is on its way...cause fall is my favorite season.

What else do I like about summer? My birthday in June! And 2 grandsons birthdays in the summer!

The coounty fair where I always give in to cotton candy...

When we lived back east it meant vacation at the shore!

the thing i love most about summer is when i was a kid just laying out on a towel in the back yard after playing in the sprinklers and letting the warm sun dry you. the sun would be so bright you had to close your eyes or put your arm across your eyes. good times

I'm in Minnesota so my summer is a little different from yours. But I love mowing my lawn and then resting in my hammock in the shade. I love walks with my dog in the evening after dinner. I love sandals. I love eating al fresco. And I love the long hours of daylight.

I love summer for several reasons:
-no school = no work
-can sleep in or lay around my house in my pjs for as long as I want to
-taking a break from the summer heat to go ice skating at an indoor rink, SO much fun!
-great time for knitting up socks at the local coffee shops and ice cream shops
-summer heat is the perfect excuse to eat all the ice cream my little heart desires
-TNT Prime Time in the Day Time
-grilling out
-attempting to grow my own veggies
-more time to yarn shop

I like that I can put the kids into shorts and a t-shirt instead of pajamas, and then they don't have to get dressed when they get up, because technically they're already dressed. I like cool nights and all the festivals and farmers markets that take place all summer long. I love taking the kids out to pick strawberries and blueberries, and eating the fruit right off the bushes.

101 degrees? Youch!! It is hovering around freezing here at night and 40 - 50 during the day ... I'm not actually a summer person myself, but there are a few things to love...for example:

A balmy summer breeze that keeps the shade from being too cool.

The smell of sun ripened tomatoes -- all earthy and fresh from my garden.

Sleeping with the windows open -- the fresh breeze in the morning and the sound of birds.

(can you tell I live further north?)

I'm so in on this one.!
Here are the first three of the top of my head --- the rest will be on the blog (with a link to you, of course).
1. I do not have to get up early just to roust the kids for school. I get to get up when MY scheduled needs it.
2. No shoes. (which means no socks :-( but I much prefer shoelessness.

3. Daylight. Lots of it. Taking blog pictures at 8 p.m. in real daylight.

Oh .. and Seasons of Lace's first Season: Summer of Lace 2008 (http://seasonsoflace.acolorfulyarn.com) of course!)

Plese dont hold it against me...But I dont love summer! In fact I dislike it very much. I tried to think of something and I just cant. I almost agreed with Teabird on the Air conditioning point but I dont like that either becaue it makes my eyes dryout. Here are my two biggest reasons why I cant like summer

1) more Bugs come up in summer (I live alone and I'm terrified of certain bugs to the point I cant be in the same apartment..but were the hell else do I have to go. NO WHERE! And I get home at night from work so its alway after a respectable hour that I encounter them. Now I heard Frigging Cicadas are hatching this summer. NOT GOOD!

2) The person next door opens their windows in the summer so at night I can't sleep because there cigarette smoke comes into my bedroom. then I have to close my window, turn on the AC and deal with dry eyes.

Hope I'm still entered in for the contest cause I need something to like about summer too! (but its okay to not like it)

What I love about summer:
1. hanging out with friends in the backyard at night with a cool breeze, while knitting
2. Going to baseball games
3. Italian water ice or gelati (ice cream and water ice together)
4. Swimming with friends
5. Going bare foot or just having flip flops on
6. Awesome fresh fruit!

PS.
I enjoyed reading your blog.

The best things about summer...

-generally there are no classes (sometimes I do go summer sessions, though)
-I get to work (not fun) and make money (fun)
-Plenty of time for horseback riding, knitting, spinning, working on my tan
-I walk or run daily (gotta get back into shape... I swear I'm like a bear; trim in summer, fatten up in winter!)
-anticipation of the coming school year

I'm so jealous. It's been in the 50s here! I'm ready for real summer!

Mostly, I just love not being cold anymore. Winters are kinda brutal here, and our apartment is cold, and my work is cold, so I'm just cold from October through May. I love being able to go for walks, go to the lake, eat ice cream and fresh fruit...

Things I love about summer....technically I'm with you on it, I don't like the heat and humidity (summers in Iowa are terribly humid!). We had some 100s here in the SF Bay Area last week. I was out doing Mom's yardwork that I'd neglected all winter. I gotta say, I LOVED IT! I love being warm all the way to the bone marrow. I love picking up some color. I love wearing less, and seeing other folks wear less (sorry if that makes me a pig). I love BBQ all year round, but it just isn't the same any other time of year. I love it all.

I guess sometimes the heat can get opressive, but I'd rather be warm than cold.

This week we are back to the 60s and windy as all heck. I'm not lovin' it.

I'll post to my blog tonite.

I like the fact that I don't have to wear so much clothes ;) And that I can get lots of sunshine on my face and skin (there must be a solar cell somewhere in my family tree).
But this summer I'm kinda cautious because I´m 5+ months pregnant and have already had fits of overheating (doesn't bode well for the rest of summer).

If your temp and my temp could just meet a happy medium it would be perfect! (we were about 55 yesterday) Having grown up in the hot humid sticky new england area then moving to hawaii for a dozen years i have learned to appreciate each season. Last summer was too short though! I love the warmth of being able to just throw on shorts and a tank and go, swimming in a clear lake and feeling weightless, the colors of the flowers (and scents), watching the creatures that explore more, farmers markets, vegetable gardens, staying light out later, not feeling the craving for heavy foods....many of these things are what i appreciate about summer!

I've moved to a hotter city and this is my first summer here. I have to say I can think of more negatives than positives.

What I DO like are:

-- Having air conditioning which can be turned on at night (because we can't sleep with any windows open due to burglaries in our city)

-- More daylight in the evenings. I hate when it gets dark so early winter.

-- An excuse to enjoy more ice cream or stop by Jamba Juice.

I'm so sorry to ready that you don't like summer.. I love everything about it! From the always available fresh fruits, to the feel of central air when you first walk into your house from the sun. To me it's the best time of year.

I'm a southerner who has moved north and haven't worn shorts in 5 years as a result! Every day here is mild at best. There's only about a week or so where it breaks 90 here, so I feel like summer just skips me by. I always think it's funny when someone complains that it's SO HOT and SO HUMID out, and it's 85 with 25% humidity. Seriously!

catmum said...

Actually I don't like summer much, never have. When I was a kid, summer meant I was stuck home under my mother's thumb. As a working adult (RN) it always meant trying to deal with other people's vacations, their kids home from school etc, and my kids home from school. Now, I'm still working as a window cleaner, and this is our massively busy season, with rich people demanding instant service for their parties. No knitting time for me!

Renna said...

Like you, I abhor summer. I guess that comes with living in Texas; though I promise you, the western side where you are is more bearable than the eastern side where I abide. Add humidity to those high temps and it can slow your body to a crawl.

That said, I do live here, and I choose not to go around grumbling about the heat all summer (unlike a certain someone who I happen to be married to, but that's his only flaw, so I try and overlook it).

Despite the horrid humidity and heat, our neighbors appear outside in the summertime. I like that it gives us a chance to get better aquainted with new neighbors then, as well as reaquainted with older ones who hibernate in the winter (we don't).

A few of our neighbors have gardens and they share that bountiful goodness from their small plots of ground with other neighbors, often us. :-) There's nothing so tasty as garden ripe tomatoes and radishes and green onions and canteloupes and watermel....well, the list could go on, but that is one of the things I truly do like about summer. :-)

Robin said...

I work seasonally so summer is my time off and that's the only thing I think I like about it. Fall and spring are mucho better. :)
I live in the midwest where humidity takes over, altho' that also allows everything to green up and be beautiful without even having to try... which is amazing since I come from the Cali desert where you have to work quite hard to make anything grow. lol. From one extreme to another I guess. A/C is a wonderful thing. The fresh produce others have mentioned, swimming in our pond, watching the birds, no snow to wade through... Sorry, can't come up with anything more orig than that. Going to look at the rest of your blog now! Thanks for the contest - I'm a new knitter so my yarn stash is non existant. lol. Have a great weekend!

I actually hate the humidity in summer, and that's why I dread it. It used to mean that the elementary kids were home, I didn't have to drive them anywhere and they played wonderfully and we just hung out. Now there are teens and it's busier in the summer when they're home.

The one great thing about summer for us is when we travel to our cabin in Idaho, then it becomes a wonderful time again...relaxing, swimming, looking at the mountain wildflowers.

Picking berries makes summer a little wonderful, too.

I live in a state (Minnesota) where the winters can be extreme. Like 5 degrees in December PLUS add in a windchill factor (how it really feels) of -15. Note the minus sign. That's pretty darn cold. And when you're waiting to catch a bus with no shelter to stand in, summer starts to look pretty darn good!

But I also like summer because of flowers. I have a gorgeous clematis plant on the south side of the house that just gets lush with huge purple flowers and it blooms almost through August. The only thing I don't like about summer is the mosquitos. Or 101 degrees. I'd be INSIDE with the A/C running for sure!

But I also enjoy laying out on a blanket looking up at the sky, summer seems the best time, not so many of those pesky spring storms. Going to the pool.
